Azerbaijan to chair Parliamentary Assembly of Economic Cooperation Organisation

A meeting of the Economic Cooperation Organisation's (ECO) Executive Council was held within the Third General Conference of the ECO Parliamentary Assembly (PA) on May 17.
While making opening remarks at the meeting, Chairman of the ECO PA and Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan Raja Pervaiz Ashraf thanked the Azerbaijani side for hosting the event and greeted the heads of parliamentary delegations and participants, the Press and Public Relations Department of the Azerbaijani parliament told APA.
Along with Azerbaijan, the delegations from Turkey, Pakistan, Iran, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan attended the meeting. While speaking about the history of the organisation, the chairman of the ECO PA highly appreciated the conducted work, the achieved success and noted the importance of the issues which were discussed at the previous general conferences.
Then he handed over the chairmanship of the ECO PA to Speaker of the Azerbaijani parliament Sahiba Gafarova.
While welcoming the participants, Gafarova thanked the Chairman of the National Assembly of Pakistan Raja Pervaiz Ashraf for the fruitful work of the organisation.
The speaker of the Azerbaijani parliament expressed confidence that the conference would be productive. After the approval of the agenda, the report of the Second General Conference of the ECO PA, the program and agenda of the Third General Conference were approved, and a number of organisational issues were considered.
The deputy chairman of the ECO PA was elected and the venue and time of the next conference were agreed at the meeting.
Then Gafarova said that the heads of the delegations participating in the conference will visit Shusha, proclaimed the cultural capital of Azerbaijan and the Cultural Capital of the Turkic world in 2023, and view the construction of the Victory Road and the ongoing construction work in Shusha city on May 18.

“The chairmanship in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO PA) has passed from Pakistan to Azerbaijan. The Parliament of Azerbaijan will make every effort during the period of chairmanship in the organization.”
The remarks came from the Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Parliament, Sahiba Gafarova, at the third general conference of the ECO PA in Baku, according to Report.
She said it was important to make efforts to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and eliminate its consequences.
“Azerbaijan assisted the countries hit by the pandemic. Now we should be ready for the next steps," Gafarova said.
The event is reportedly attended by delegations headed by the Secretary-General of the PA ECO, and the speakers of the parliaments of Turkey, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan.
