Azerbaijan: Military attachés, journalists inspect minefield in Lachin district

Foreign countries’ military attachés accredited to Azerbaijan and media representatives have inspected the minefield detected by the Azerbaijan Army’s engineer-sapper units in the northern direction of the Saribaba high ground.

The minefield consisting of Armenian-made anti-personnel mines was installed by illegal Armenian armed detachments, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Azerbaijani Defence Ministry’s press service.

During the visit organised by the Defence Ministry, the representatives were provided with detailed information about the demining activities conducted in the area and the minefield detected on November 21 and consisting of 350 PMN-E anti-personnel mines produced in Armenia in 2021.

As part of the visit to the area, Major-General of the Azerbaijani Army Munasib Babayev said that 1,300 mines planted by illegal Armenian armed formations have been found on the top of Saribaba.

"Now we are at the top of Saribab. Some 350 mines planted by the enemy were found here. These mines were produced in 2021 in Armenia and are in service with this country," he said.

Babayev noted that illegal Armenian militants even installed anti-tank mines on Saribaba.

"Yesterday [Novemver 23], at the Azerbaijani Defence Ministry's invitation, the commander of the Russian peacekeeping forces temporarily stationed in Azerbaijan, Andei Volkov, the head of the Turkish contingent of the joint Turkish-Russian monitoring centre, Major General Fatih Akpinar, and the head of the Russian contingent, Rear Admiral Oleg Semenov, visited the territory. With their consent, engineering troops will continue mine clearance work on November 25 under peacekeepers' control," he said.

In the meantime, Lieutenant Colonel of the Defence Ministry Javid Jabbarov told the visiting delegation members that the mines installed in Saribab in the Lachin district contain 65 grams of explosives in the form of powder and that they were installed to cause greater human casualties after the second Karabakh War.

According to him, the mines found are "high-explosive antipersonnel mines. They were installed here in the first week of 2021 after the Patriotic War".
