Azerbaijani parliament condemns EP's biased resolution on human rights

    POLITICS  25 April 2024 - 20:25

The Milli Majlis (parliament) has rebuked the European Parliament's resolution on civil society and human rights in Azerbaijan, condemning it as biased and prejudiced.

Caliber.Az, citing a statement from parliament, reports that the Milli Majlis views the European Parliament's resolution, adopted on April 25, 2024, as a politically motivated action against Azerbaijan. The statement strongly rejects the resolution's unfounded accusations, which are deemed to be based on false and falsified information.

"It is regrettable that after the Second Karabakh War, which ended with the liberation of Azerbaijani territories from 30-year-long Armenian occupation, this international organization has become a tool in the hands of forces conducting an anti-Azerbaijani campaign," the statement reads.

The Milli Majlis highlighted the European Parliament's repeated adoption of resolutions against Azerbaijan since 2021 under various pretexts. Parliamentarians emphasized that the recent resolution coincides with ongoing efforts to normalize relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, particularly regarding promising steps in border delimitation.

"Taking this into account, another such action of the European Parliament is obviously the result of the efforts of circles unwilling to come to terms with the new realities in the South Caucasus region, wishing to damage the peace process and the reputation of our country," the statement continued.

The parliamentarians criticized the growing Azerbaijanophobic, Turkophobic, and Islamophobic sentiments within the European Parliament, attributing the biased resolution to the influence of the Armenian lobby and its supporters. They accused certain Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) of prioritizing the interests of lobby groups over those of European voters, denouncing their "racist and chauvinist mindset."

The statement also condemned the European Parliament's biased assessment of human rights in Azerbaijan, highlighting the organization's silence on the large-scale violations of rights endured by over a million Azerbaijani refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) during the Armenian occupation of Azerbaijani lands.

"The European Parliament, which does not hesitate to slander Azerbaijan in this matter, has always preferred to keep silent about the large-scale violations of the rights of more than a million Azerbaijani refugees and IDPs, who were victims of ethnic cleansing and genocide during the occupation of Azerbaijani lands by Armenia," the statement concluded.
