Armenia sees demographic threat from growing Indian influx

Armenia has seen a sign of uncontrolled Islamic influence in the increasing influx of Indians into the country, Caliber.Az reports citing Armenian media.

Edgar Ghazaryan, former chief of staff of the Armenian Constitutional Court, said in an interview with Armenian reporters that last year some 130,000 Indians were granted special residence status, which is twice the number of all national minorities in Armenia.

"Until now we had 56,000 members of national minorities. We don't know exactly what the ethnic and religious composition of these 130,000 people is," he said.

"220 million Muslims are living in Armenia. It should be noted that only young people have arrived, mostly men, who, by taking root here, will form a generation. Unlike Armenian citizens, they are not registered in polyclinics, we don't know their state of health, we don't know who should treat them if they fall ill, they don't join the army, and they don't pay taxes. In other words, they are in a privileged position compared to us," the official says.

Kazaryan claims that this is a special migration policy that is changing the demographic composition of Armenia with uncontrolled Islamic influence, adding that he sees serious dangers in it.

"The opening of migration services in the regions will lead to a sharp increase in the Indian population, not only in Yerevan but also in our other cities," says Ghazaryan.
