Russian Foreign Ministry accuses NATO of preparing for potential conflict

The Russian Foreign Ministry has raised concerns over NATO's recent activities in Eastern Europe and the Black Sea, suggesting that they are indicative of preparations for a potential conflict with Russia.

The ministry emphasized its view that NATO's actions are contributing to heightened military tensions along Russia's borders, Kommersant reports.

"The expansion of the Romanian airbase is yet another proof that the North Atlantic bloc continues its unrestrained militarization of Eastern Europe and the Black Sea region," the Foreign Ministry stated.

Highlighting developments in Poland and the Baltic States, the ministry noted the ongoing strengthening of coalition potentials, further fueling apprehensions regarding NATO's intentions in the region.

The Foreign Ministry characterized NATO's activities as provocative and cautioned that they exacerbate existing military tensions.

"The alliance's actions exacerbate military tensions along the perimeter of Russia's borders," the ministry added.

Recent reports unveiled NATO's ambitious plans, including the construction of what is touted to become the largest NATO base in Europe, situated in Romania. Estimated at €2.5 billion, the base is expected to accommodate up to 10,000 military personnel, according to Euronews.

Moreover, NATO recently inaugurated its first base in the Western Balkans, located south of the Albanian capital, Tirana. Local authorities have cited its purpose as "protecting Albania from Russia."

Amidst these developments, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg previously remarked in January that he saw no immediate threats from Russia, underscoring a backdrop of differing perceptions regarding security concerns in the region.
