Azerbaijan gears up for COP29 embracing environmental challenges ahead

    During the first press conference of COP29, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, Mukhtar Babayev, underscored the significant challenges and responsibilities as the country gears up to host the conference for the first time among CIS countries.

    "Azerbaijan sets itself big tasks in environmental protection, preserving the environment, fighting climate change," Minister Babayev stated, emphasizing the critical importance of COP29's agenda. The upcoming conference, slated to be held in Baku, has spurred Azerbaijan into action, with preparations underway to address pressing environmental issues, Caliber.Az reports.

    Babayev revealed that consultations and discussions with various states and international organizations are ongoing as part of the preparation for COP29. He highlighted that a range of projects will be implemented to align with Azerbaijan's environmental goals.

    Notable figures leading COP29 were also introduced during the conference. Alongside Babayev as the president, the leadership includes MP Nigar Arpadarai as the UN climate change high-level champion, Executive Director Elnur Soltanov, Chief Operations Officer for COP29 Narmin Jarchalova. Additionally, youth climate champion Leyla Hasanova was mentioned among the leadership team.

    A significant moment at the event was the unveiling of the logo for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The logo, presented at the COP29 headquarters, symbolizes Azerbaijan's multifaceted initiatives for the presidency. It incorporates elements of the Buta, a leaf, and water droplets, showcasing the country's environmental sensitivity and rich cultural heritage within the context of natural resource importance.

    Adding to the announcements, Jarchalova, the Chief Operations Officer of COP29, revealed the venue for the conference. The main events and activities on the sidelines of COP29 will take place at the Baku Olympic Stadium, Report informs.

    "COP29 is scheduled to be held from November 11 to 25," Jarchalova announced, setting the dates for this significant gathering focused on addressing global environmental challenges.
