Armenia's Pashinyan affirms commitment to peace talks despite mediator ineffectiveness

    REGION  07 May 2024 - 17:03

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said that the ineffectiveness of mediators is not a reason to refuse negotiations with Azerbaijan.

Pashinyan made the remarks at a press conference, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.

“We do not automatically reject mediation. But there is mediation, which over time shows its ineffectiveness and problems for us. This is Azerbaijan’s favorite topic, they often like to talk about it. Who said that Yerevan is happy with all the mediators that have been in place so far? Their activities, behavior, work,” Pashinyan said.

According to the prime minister, it should be understood that none of the mediators seeks to ensure Armenia's interests more than Yerevan itself.

"But on the other hand, we do not reject mediation, as there are mediators whom we consider objective, neutral and sincere," the Armenian premier said.

As Pashinyan noted, if mediated talks do not go well for some reason, it does not mean that negotiations should be abandoned altogether.

"That is, if mediators are ineffective, then what, we should not do it anymore? No, this is our agenda," Pashinyan noted.

On the initiative of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, talks between the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia will be held in Almaty on May 10.
