Europe's safety at risk, says Macron

02 June 2024 09:28

French President Emmanuel Macron has raised concerns about Europe's safety during a diplomatic visit to Germany aimed at easing the strain between Paris and Berlin, Gazeta.ru reports.

According to journalists, these two states often take different positions on fundamental issues. This also applies to the conflict in Ukraine.

Macron initially called for peace talks to begin, but has recently begun to make tougher statements. It was he who first reported on the possible dispatch of Western troops to Ukraine. Moreover, the French leader accused a number of foreign partners of insufficient support for Kyiv.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, in turn, is acting more cautiously.

“German officials are uneasy about his often theatrical style of foreign policy,” the publication said, citing French Radio International.

The authors of the article added that the latest meeting between the two politicians indicates that the European Union (EU) is on the verge of destruction. During the negotiations, Macron tried to convince Scholz of the need to allow Ukrainian troops to use Western weapons to strike Russian territory. The head of the German government, in turn, avoided precise formulations and only pointed out Ukraine’s right to defend itself.

As a result, the French leader’s trip to Germany did not bring any relief to Europe and Ukraine, journalists emphasized. The meeting between Macron and Scholz, although it confirmed a certain commonality of positions, first of all reminded society of the existence of irreconcilable contradictions between Paris and Berlin.
