US explores lifting restrictions on Ukrainian strikes deep into Russia
The Biden administration is considering allowing Ukraine to carry out long-range strikes deep within Russian territory, according to statements made by US President Joe Biden.
In response to questions from reporters, Biden confirmed that the matter is currently under review, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in an interview with a British newspaper, echoed this sentiment, saying that authorizing such strikes "is not out of the question." He emphasized the need for Washington to assess Ukraine's ability to use and maintain advanced Western weapons systems before making a final decision. "We have adapted and adjusted every step along the way, and we will continue to do so," Blinken noted.
Meanwhile, a group of Republican lawmakers has urged Biden to lift the remaining restrictions on the use of US-supplied long-range weapons, arguing that concerns over escalating the conflict are unwarranted. The letter, signed by key members of the House Foreign Affairs, Intelligence, and Armed Services Committees, calls for Ukraine to be allowed to strike targets deep inside Russia.
The issue is expected to be a key topic of discussion when Biden meets British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on September 13. Blinken, who arrived in Kyiv alongside British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, hinted that both nations are weighing whether to allow Ukraine to utilize long-range weapons such as the UK's Storm Shadow missiles.
"We will be listening carefully to our Ukrainian partners and will report back to President Biden and Prime Minister Starmer in the coming days," Blinken stated.
