Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour sets to list UK mansion for $18.2 million
WORLD 13 August 2022 - 20:30
The couple built a nearly 8,000-square-foot seaside retreat inspired by the property’s original 19th-century bathhouse.
Pink Floyd guitarist and vocalist David Gilmour and his wife, writer Polly Samson, have decided to sell their custom-built home in Hove, a seaside resort town in East Sussex, England, for £15 million (US$18.33 million), Mansion Global has learned.
Complete with a cottage, recording studio and ample parking, the nearly 8,000-square-foot home is located along King’s Esplanade and next to the beach, offering open sea views to the south, according to Perry Press, the founder of Pereds, the London-based property consultancy. The property is set to hit the market in the next week or so, he said.
The seaside abode offers far-reaching views of the English Channel, as well as quick access to the water.
Gilmour joined Pink Floyd in 1967, performing on albums such as “The Dark Side of the Moon” (1973) and “The Wall” (1979). He also performs as a solo artist and is a champion of several environmental causes. Ms. Samson has collaborated with Pink Floyd on a number of songs, and her most recent novel, “A Theatre for Dreamers” (2020), was on the Sunday Times Bestseller list. They married in 1994.
The property was reportedly given to the couple in 2015 by the developer Sirus Taghan, who had been denied planning permits on a number of occasions, according to an article in The Guardian at the time.
At that time, a 19th-century bathhouse was on the site. It was demolished in 2018, and Keb Garavito Bruhn, a founding partner of the architecture firm Pilbrow & Partners, was brought on to design the residence. The firm took inspiration from the bathhouse, mimicking its crow-stepped gable, as well as the half-moon-shaped window at the top.
In addition, glazed ceramic tiles that were originally part of one of the pools were “retained in-situ and restored as a backdrop” to the courtyard, according to Pilbrow & Partners website. English garden designer Arabella Lennox-Boyd was behind the landscaping.
The open floor plan has doors to the courtyard, creating an indoor-outdoor space for the family in the summer. The firm also maximized views by creating an L-shaped layout.
“The main bedroom, with sea views in all directions, is a beautiful place from which to watch the sunrise and sunset across the sea,” the couple continued. “When you wake up in the morning, the view is always a surprise: the sea and sky are never the same. At night, it’s intoxicating to watch from bed the moon reflected in the water.”
Other amenities include hardwood flooring and underfloor heating throughout, polished plaster ceilings and walls, log-burning and gas-operated open fires and a host of sustainability and smart-home features, including a remote-controlled door entry system with biometric fingerprint access, the listing said.
There’s also a guest cottage and a state-of-the-art recording studio, which was converted from a Victorian artist’s studio.
