Armen Vardanyan on aggravation on Armenia-Azerbaijan border: Iran not to go further than statements
REGION 24 September 2022 - 14:16
Mass protests take place in Iran every year, and the existing regime there, which is based on violence, is bound to crack one day, Iranist Armen Vardanyan said.
Mass protests have been raging for several days in Iran due to the killing of 22-year-old student Mahsa Amini by the morality police. She was detained for improperly wearing a hijab. The protests included women removing their hijabs and burning them in bonfires right on the street.
"This is not the first such case in Iran, similar protests happen every year. There is a constant struggle for civil rights there. I don't know when, but sooner or later this theocratic regime is bound to fall. It is an artificially created regime, with a very strong repressive apparatus, hundreds of thousands of police officers and various security forces," he stressed, Caliber.Az reports citing Armenian media.
Part of the reason for the protest, according to the Armenian expert, is that the authorities pay less attention to the problems of ordinary citizens and give many privileges to the security forces, creating good conditions for them to retain their power. And the repressive apparatus works very well.
As for Armenia, the unrest in Iran, he estimates, is unlikely to affect the situation around the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.
"I find it difficult to say how far Iran will go in its actions if Azerbaijan tries to open the Zangazur corridor by force. During border incidents Iran usually does not take active actions, at best it limits itself to political statements. Even if everything was calm there, I am not sure they would go beyond statements," Vardanyan concluded.
