New York showcases rare Azerbaijani Safavid period carpets

    An exhibition of rare Azerbaijani carpets woven during the Safavid period has been held in New York, US.

    The exhibition entitled “Azerbaijani Carpet Splendor: Safavid Treasures” was organised by the Azerbaijani embassy in the US together with the American Chamber of Commerce in Azerbaijan (USACC) operating in Washington at the Turkish House in New York, Report informs.

    Azerbaijani Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Azerbaijan to the US Khazar Ibrahim, Consul General of Türkiye in New York Reyhan Ozgur, USACC Executive Director Natig Bakhishov, Turkish and Azerbaijani diplomats working in the US, representatives of the diaspora of both fraternal countries and the local community, as well as famous US carpet collectors attended the exhibition.

    Some 13 rare carpets woven upon the order of ruler of the Safavid Dynasty Shah Abbas were showcased at the exhibition.

    Palace carpets dating back to the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries are part of the personal collection of Amir Oskouei, a native of South Azerbaijan living in Boston, US. Along with carpets from Tabriz and Karabakh, miniature carpets were also showcased here.

    USACC Executive Director Natig Bakhishov, Ambassador Khazar Ibrahim and Azerbaijani carpet collector Amir Oskouei delivered speeches at the exhibition.

    Soloist of the Dresden Symphony Orchestra, member of the Norwegian Musicians’ Union, kamancha (bowed string instrument) player Shabnam Huseyn performed a concert programme consisting of works by Azerbaijani composers.

    Then the guests were informed about the carpets.
