Secretary General: Azerbaijan making great contribution to CICA activity

Secretary General of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) Kairat Sarybay has said that the CICA Advisory Council has achieved its goal.

“The CICA Advisory Council has achieved its goal. We celebrate its 32nd anniversary this year,” Sarybay said at a press conference, APA reports.

He said that Azerbaijan's chairmanship in the CICA is a very important event.

“Azerbaijan is making a great contribution to the CICA’s activity, in which most Asian countries are members. We think that this contribution will still be made during Azerbaijan’s chairmanship in the organisation because Azerbaijan holds a very important place in all international organisations in which it is a member,” Sarybay noted.

“One of Azerbaijan's main priorities during its chairmanship will be to make an important contribution to further enhancing Asia's role in the issues of international importance. Today CICA is also engaged in mediation at the global level. We hope that the work on the institutional development of the organisation will be carried out in the coming period. One of them is related to the need to adopt a new charter. This need arose as a result of geopolitical changes in the world,” he added.

“CICA also pays attention to the development of culture, ecology, and civil society in its member states. The cooperation with Azerbaijan’s Alat free economic zone is also important within the CICA. On the other hand, protecting the environment and combating climate change are also a priority for the CICA. A meeting is planned to be held in summer to further strengthen environmental cooperation within the CICA,” the secretary general noted.

The Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) is a multi-national forum for enhancing cooperation towards promoting peace, security and stability in Asia. It is a forum based on the recognition that there is a close link between peace, security and stability in Asia and in the rest of the world. The Member States, while affirming their commitment to the UN Charter, believe that peace and security in Asia can be achieved through dialogue and cooperation leading to a common indivisible area of security in Asia where all states co-exist peacefully and their peoples live in peace, freedom and prosperity.
