EU envoy concerned about hatred towards human rights defenders in Armenia

EU Ambassador to Armenia Andrea Wiktorin said that human rights activists and civil society organizations have been the target of criticism and hatred.

"Armenia needs a powerful civil society, their active participation in policy development and governance reforms is important to achieve political change in Armenia," Wiktorin, made these remarks during the Armenian Democracy Forum held in Yerevan, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Armenian media.

“Nevertheless, the civil society of Armenia is being criticized. Last week I listened to complaints from NGOs that protect the rights of women and children and fight against domestic violence, supporting the LGBT community - they are being attacked. And the same groups complain about the restriction of their rights. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is not selective,” Wiktorin said.

She added that everyone has equal rights and freedoms regardless of nationality, race or religion.
