Armenian official clarifies latest Brussels statement on communication unblocking
REGION 24 May 2022 - 09:56
Armenian Security Council Secretary Armen Grigoryan has commented on the wording regarding the unblocking of communications contained in the statement of European Council President [Charles Michel] following the negotiations [between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Michel] in Brussels.
Armenpress news agency published the translation of the questions and answers provided by the Armenian Security Council staff, Caliber.Az reports.
Grigoryan explained what is meant by the phrase "communication between different parts of Armenia on the territory of Azerbaijan".
"The point is that, for example, Armenian citizens and cargo can get to Meghri from Yeraskh (Arazdayan – ed.) through the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and vice versa, on the same principles as Azerbaijani citizens, and cargo can get to Nakhchivan from Horadiz through Armenia," Grigoryan said.
He also answered the question of why the territory of Nakhchivan should be used to move from one part of Armenia to another.
"This may happen because the railway connecting the north of Armenia with the south passes through Nakhchivan. And further, the topic under discussion is the opening of all communications in the region, and the issue of the principles of opening and operation of all existing communications should be resolved. Discussions are proceeding in this logic," the Security Council secretary said.
Grigoryan recalled that "in the same context, the issue of transport communication from the Republic of Armenia through the territory of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic to the Islamic Republic of Iran and through the eastern regions of Azerbaijan to the Russian Federation and back is being discussed".
