Azerbaijan celebrates National Salvation Day

Today, on June 15, Azerbaijan celebrates National Salvation Day.

In June 1993, against the background of the deepest internal political crisis, the threat of the collapse of the country and the civil war, accepting the insistent invitations of the Azerbaijani people, the outstanding son of Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev, arrived in Baku from Nakhchivan. On June 15, he was elected Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

In October 1993, Heydar Aliyev was elected as Azerbaijani president. In a short time, he managed to stabilise the situation, preventing a civil war.

At the request of the people, the Milli Majlis declared this day a holiday in June 1997.
