EU allocates over $1 billion in flood relief to affected member states
The EU has approved additional financial support for five member states affected by floods in 2023.
On September 23, the EU agreed to allocate an extra 1 billion euros ($1.113 billion) in aid to Italy, France, Austria, Greece, and Slovenia due to the damages caused by the floods this year, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
The largest shares of this funding - 450 million euros ($500 million) for Italy and 430 million euros ($478 million) for Slovenia - will be allocated to the countries most severely impacted by the disaster.
Last week, several countries in Central and Eastern Europe, namely, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, and Romania, were severely affected by heavy rains and floods. At least 23 people lost their lives due to the disaster, and flooding also began in northern Italy.
As a sign of solidarity, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited Wrocław, Poland, where she announced access to 10 billion euros ($11.132 billion) from the Cohesion Fund for the affected countries.
