German Chancellor awaits right time for talks with Russian leader
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has expressed his intention to resume talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, with the recent contact between the two leaders dating back to 2022.
Scholz stated he aims to have discussions with Putin "at the right time", Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
However, Scholz emphasised that as a responsible politician, he would not engage in these talks alone.
"Dialogue with Putin will require numerous contacts and negotiations with many other people," he added.
He also noted that any such discussions need to be coordinated with Ukraine. When asked about the date of his talks with the Russian leader, Scholz responded, "Soon."
In June 2024, Scholz indicated that he was open to talks with Putin, but only if the discussions would address specific issues.
In mid-October, Scholz reiterated his willingness to negotiate with Putin on ending the war "on fair terms." Meanwhile, in early October, the Kremlin stated that Putin remained open to dialogue, even though relations between Moscow and Berlin have effectively hit rock bottom.
On November 11, the Kremlin stated that no signals have been received from Berlin regarding the possibility of talks between Chancellor Scholz and President Putin. "Currently, no preparation is underway. We haven't received any signals," said Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for the Russian president.
"If they say that signals will come, we will wait for them. But so far, there have been none," he added.
Peskov added that President Putin remains open to dialogue.
