Hungary assures EU of completion of peacekeeping mission in Ukraine
The Hungarian authorities have notified the EU member states that they consider the peacekeeping mission in Ukraine completed, Caliber.Az reports, citing Spanish media.
The announcement, made by Hungarian Minister for EU Affairs Janos Boka, has exacerbated tensions between Hungary and the EU.
The decision comes amid a broader crisis in Hungary-EU relations, influenced by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's close ties with Russia and his recent visits to Russia, China, and a meeting with former US President Donald Trump. Orban's actions, including blocking military aid to Ukraine, have provoked strong reactions from European institutions and member states, especially as Hungary begins its presidency of the Council of the EU.
While Hungary has declared the peacekeeping mission in Ukraine concluded, there are concerns among EU capitals that Prime Minister Orban could choose to resume the mission at his discretion. This development underscores the complex dynamics at play within the EU regarding its collective stance on the Ukraine conflict and relations with Russia.
