Pentagon: Ukrainian pilots continue F-16 training in Western countries
Spokesperson for the US Department of Defense Patrick Ryder has said that Western countries continue to train Ukrainian Armed Forces pilots in Denmark and Arizona to operate F-16 fighter jets.
“Yeah. So, right now, as I understand it, there continues to be F-16 training in Arizona and in Denmark. In terms of within Ukraine, I don't have any updates to provide. I'd have to refer you to the Ukrainians on that front. As you know, they have received some F-16s. And in terms of DOD [Department of Defense] contractors, US DOD contractors, I'm not aware of any right now,” Caliber.Az quotes Ryder as addressing a Pentagon press briefing on August 20.
The training of Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighter jets is part of broader Western military support for Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia. The decision to provide Ukraine with F-16s represents a significant escalation in the type of military aid offered by Western allies, as these advanced jets could potentially enhance Ukraine's air defence capabilities.
Given that the F-16's systems and procedures are primarily in English, Ukrainian pilots must have a high level of English proficiency to understand manuals, communicate effectively with air traffic controllers, and participate in training sessions.
This phase involves classroom instruction on the F-16's systems, avionics, weapons, and procedures. Pilots learn about aircraft performance, flight planning, air combat manoeuvring, and emergency procedures.
A number of countries, including the United States, Denmark, and the Netherlands, are involved in training Ukrainian pilots. These countries are providing both instructors and training facilities to ensure that the pilots are prepared to operate the F-16s effectively.
