Pro-Iranian commanders flee Syria in fear of US attack
In response to a drone strike in Jordan that killed three US soldiers last week, the US military is gearing up to attack Iranian targets and pro-Iranian militias.
It will be a series of strikes that could spread to several countries, Detaly.co.il cites multiple reports in the US. According to one estimate, the US will target senior commanders of pro-Iranian militias in Iraq and Syria. They have been responsible for more than 160 attacks on US forces in the Middle East since the start of the Gaza war.
According to a Syrian opposition source, senior commanders of pro-Iranian militias in eastern Syria have begun to leave for Iran. An Iraqi security source told the US CBS network the same thing, reporting that militias had begun evacuating bases in Iraq and Syria for fear of a US attack.
According to a Reuters report, Iran's decision to evacuate senior commanders from Syria comes amid recent liquidations attributed to Israel, including IRGC Brigadier General Reza Mousavi and five military advisers to the Quds Force in Damascus. One of the sources noted the trend of a significant reduction in Iran's presence in Syria.
