Ukrainian servicemen complete training on Leopard 2 tanks in Germany

Ukrainians who arrived in Germany for operational training on the Leopard 2 main battle tanks (MBTs) have completed their training, writes Tagesschau, as reported by European Pravda.

After several weeks of training, the soldiers conducted live-fire exercises on March 13 at a military training ground in Bergen, Lower Saxony.

The training will allow Ukrainian soldiers to carry out combat operations using modern weapon systems, as Brigadier General Björn Schulz, Commander of the Munster Tank School, said at a military training ground in Lower Saxony.

Germany will provide Ukraine with 18 modern Leopard 2A6 main battle tanks, and Portugal will supply 3 more. This is part of the military assistance aimed at helping Ukraine defend itself against Russia. Experts firmly believe the Leopard 2 has a clear advantage in combat against Russian armed forces. Ukrainian soldiers are due to come back home with the tanks in March.

On 25 January, the German Federal Government announced the goal of "quickly building up two tank battalions with Leopard 2 tanks for Ukraine". Such battalions usually have 31 tanks in service in Ukraine. The main participants in the initiative are Poland, Norway, Canada and Spain.

As reported last week, training for Ukrainian soldiers on Leopard 2 tanks has been completed in Poland, and the country has received the remaining 10 of the 14 promised units from Poland. Four tanks were handed over earlier.
