French diplomat blames Armenia for wrong choices over Karabakh issue
KARABAKH 01 February 2023 - 13:11
Former French Ambassador to the United States and Permanent Representative of the country to the UN, Gerard Haro, wrote on his Twitter page that Armenia had made a mistake at the time, refusing to seek a compromise on the issue of Karabakh's location within Azerbaijan.
"For decades, Armenia refused to discuss the status of Karabakh within Azerbaijan, which was the only decision that Azerbaijan would accept and which the international community defended," he wrote.
“Do not forget about the UN Security Council resolutions, which reminded us of the principle of inviolability of borders. For the international community and Azerbaijan, this status cannot be presented in the form of more or less broad autonomy. This is something that Armenia has never accepted."
Haro added that France has warned Armenia about a gradual change in the balance against Yerevan, which could have reached a compromise when it still had the advantage. But, according to him, Armenia refused to work for it and the results are currently obvious.
"Through negotiations, everything would have passed peacefully and by mutual agreement. The international community has repeatedly stated that Soviet borders between the republics are non-negotiable. This would be tantamount to opening Pandora's box with the most devastating consequences," he explained.
