US Miami-Dade district declares February 26 as Khojaly's Remembrance Day

The US district of Miami-Dade has declared February 26 as the Day of Remembrance of Khojaly genocide.

In this regard, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levin Kava and Miami-Dade County Commissioners Board Chairman Oliver G. Gilbert III signed the Declaration, the Azerbaijani State Committee for Work with Diaspora told Report.

In the declaration, which begins with the words of former US Attorney General Robert Francis Kennedy, “The history of mankind is made up of countless different feats of courage and faith. Every time a person defends an ideal or acts to improve the situation of others, or fights against injustice, he sends hope,” it is said that on the night of February 25-26, 1992, as a result of the massacre committed by Armenian gangs in the Azerbaijani city of Khojaly, more than 600 civilians died, including children, women and the elderly. It was noted that well-known international human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch, called this tragedy the largest massacre in the region.

The authors of the declaration stressed that Azerbaijanis living in Miami-Dade County, Florida and all over the world commemorate the victims of Khojaly every year.

On behalf of Miami-Dade County, February 26 has been proclaimed a day of remembrance for Khojaly.

The declaration was presented to the head of the Azerbaijani-American Youth Association, operating in Florida, Nabat Eminova.
