South Korean police foils attempt to break into office of country's president
Members of a radical-left student association attempted to break into the office building of South Korean President Yun Suk-Yeol and were detained by police.
"Employees of the police department of the Seoul district of Yongsan detained red-handed 20 members of the Korean Student Progressive Union on charges of illegal entry into the building," the Yonhap News Agency reports.
It is noted that the students gathered in front of the presidential office 10 minutes before the attempted entry and shouted various slogans, including demanding the president's resignation and a special investigation into the alleged financial fraud of his wife Kim Keon-hee.
The rally was not pre-arranged. The student union members asked for a meeting with administration officials and then began to break into the building through gates and fences. Some of them managed to get through the checkpoint, while the rest staged a sit-in in front of the checkpoint. The police have taken the detainees to different stations and are investigating the circumstances and motives behind the incident.
