Caliber.Az presents an interview with a well-known Russian lawyer and public figure, a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences Yanis Yuksha.

    - What, in terms of international law, contributed to the deepening of the Russian-Ukrainian crisis?

    - In short, the so-called crisis between Ukraine and Russia is a kind of cliche constructed by Western political technologists to blame Russia for all the troubles. Of course, everything is much deeper and more complicated, since the crisis was inspired by the collective West to crush and bring Russia to its knees. In a different form, in their understanding, Russia cannot exist.

    - That is, the war of Russia in Ukraine was inevitable?

    - Unfortunately, yes. Everything was done to ensure that this war took place and that it was Russia that was involved in a large-scale conflict.

    - Slightly before the war, literally on February 22, British and American intelligence reported about the upcoming Russian attack on Ukraine...

    - They did not inform the world community about the attack, nothing like that was known to them. Everything possible was done to provoke Russia, but they miscalculated. This was also a provocation aimed at forcing Russia to participate in this conflict.

    - But Russia followed this provocation and attacked Ukraine...

    - Russia began to defend itself. It was made an offer it couldn't refuse.

    - Which?

    - The fact that if it does not preventively begin to defend itself, then hostilities will be transferred to its territory, with appropriate consequences. It was completely clear what would happen next.

If it does not start to defend itself in a preventive way, combat operations will move to its territory with appropriate results. It was totally clear what would happen next.

    - Russia invaded Ukraine to protect itself from Western attacks?

    - Get it right. If a man pulls the trigger of a gun, this doesn't mean the gun kills. A man kills, but a gun shoots. Ukraine is an instrument of influence on Russia, fuelled by the collective West, which wants to outrage Russia and humiliate it.

    - If so, then why did Russia, which designated its defensive mission as a "special operation", launch a full-scale war throughout the country?

    - Let's start with the concept of "special operations". A special operation involves targeted strikes, and Russia acted in this way. And the reality is that a terrible abscess has grown up next to Russia - Anti-Russia, which is trying by any means to influence Russia at the suggestion of the collective West. That is, to break its economy, to commit some destructive actions, including imposing sanctions, after which Russia should crawl and ask for forgiveness. A special operation is not about catching some saboteurs and terrorists that fill the whole of Ukraine. Ukraine is flooded with rabble from all over the world. From the UK, France, and the US. In the Russian Federation, the official number of military personnel is over a million. In Ukraine, this contingent is 140,000. The group that was concentrated in Donbas from the Ukrainian side is estimated at 170,000 servicemen. Therefore, for Russia, this is a limited military operation. We did not announce mobilisation, did not use cutting-edge weapons. Russia states that our servicemen are dying somewhere, defending the Russian world and our friendly "republics", which we recognised without violating UN rules.

Within the existing rules, we recognised them despite the efforts of the collective West to harm Russia in every possible way.

    - Are you sure that Russia, destroying entire regions and cities of another independent state, did not violate the laws and rules of international law?

    - I will answer this way: Russia did not destroy Ukrainian cities, they were destroyed by Ukrainian troops.

    - Curious, what cities were destroyed by the Ukrainians?

    - Donetsk, Mariupol and many other small towns. Of course, in the course of a military special operation, there are serious costs that Russia is trying to offset for its friendly republics. Russia spends material resources, incurs economic damage, and the Ukrainian army is doing everything possible to destroy and damage the recognised "republics" as much as possible.

    - What "republics" do you mean?

    - You are somewhat disingenuous, asking me about them again. Meanwhile, it is known that if at least one of the UN countries recognises the independence of these "republics", then they become a subject of international law. To date, two republics - the "DPR" [Donetsk People’s Republic] and "LPR" [Luhansk People’s Republic] are recognised by the Russian Federation and, accordingly, have become a subject of international law within the UN.

    - That is, even though apart from Russia, these two entities have not been recognised by anyone, including the international community?

    - Don't you mean the international community that lies from morning to night about Bucha, or countries that encroach on the independence of other states, such as Libya, Syria, and Iraq? If so, then such an international community is rubbish. And the opinion of garbage for Russia a priori cannot be interesting.

    - The concept of "international community" implies not only the opinion of the West or the United States. The non-recognition of the "LNR" and "DNR" was announced by Kazakhstan, which, by the way, is in the same military and economic bloc as Russia.

    - And we do not impose our point of view on anyone. This is Kazakhstan's stance, and it may not coincide with the stance of Russia, even though the country is very dependent on Moscow. This fact is just the same indicator of the highest democratic relations between Russia and Kazakhstan. Meanwhile, Russia is helping Kazakhstan a lot, we saved the country from unrest, but for all this, we do not put forward any obligations to the country's leadership.

    - It is very noble if everything is exactly as you voiced...

    - Absolutely

    - Are you sure that the announced choice will not affect the further situation in Kazakhstan, and that Russia will not have to save the country again from new shocks?

    - No consequences in this sense should be expected. Consequences are to be expected on planet Earth. Europe is becoming a periphery right before our eyes, and the United States is not interested in it in its current form. In the coming decades, the centres of power will shift in other directions, and a small European part of our continent will turn into some kind of kitchen gardens and farm buildings. Their economy will rapidly collapse, and Europe will gradually disintegrate.

    - And what will happen to Ukraine and how long will the war last?

    - The war, as you said, it is a special operation, which I insist on, will end when Ukraine stops destroying people in this territory with the help of American and European hands, destroying its infrastructure, which is out of its interest. I think that it will not take so long as the weapons in Ukraine are already running out. Approximately by autumn, all issues will be resolved one way or another. Presumably by October... I am not a military person, so I am guided by my own considerations and assumptions. As for the future of Ukraine, it is difficult for me to predict this; rather, I will say what is happening to it now. Ukraine has lost its status as an object of international law, and this is the most important factor.

    - You mean in the understanding of Russia?

    - Definitely, and not only [in Russia’s understanding]. I think, in the understanding of the entire world community as well.

    - The one you just criticised?

    - I want to say that Ukraine in the sense in which it was before will cease to exist. There will be either a different configuration of this country, or an attempt to make Anti-Russia on this territory again, or, nevertheless, Russia will find the willpower in itself to reformat the remnants of some once-prosperous republic. During the Soviet Union, Ukraine was the most advanced and flourishing republic. And over the past 30 years, the country has been plundered and looted. What Ukraine will look like in the future will largely depend on its curators of the Western world and Russia, which will not allow the appearance of a gangster formation on its territory.

    - You have said that you do not have a military education, but as a lawyer, you fully justify all the steps and actions of Russia. I have this question. Why did the decision of Finland and Sweden to join NATO come as a shock to Russia?

    - Finland, which has risen in relations with Russia and earlier with the Soviet Union and which at one time was allowed to become a valve between the Western and the socialist world, has always positioned itself as a quiet neighbour. And suddenly, at some point, she saw an enemy in the face of Russia.

    - Don't you admit that the Finns were frightened off by Russia's missile attacks on Ukraine and subsequently the same prospect concerning the Baltic countries?

Nothing frightened them. For Russia, it is important that we finally get left behind. We want to convey to everyone one single thought: get away from us, do not meddle in our monastery with your charter, do not teach us and arrange insinuations in the public mind. And then, finally, peace and happiness will come.
