Azerbaijan's MFA reaffirms country's commitment to multilateral diplomacy On International Peace Day

24 April 2026 14:28

Azerbaijan has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening global cooperation and advancing diplomatic engagement across international platforms on April 24, marking the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasised that Azerbaijan, as an active member of the Global South and a strong advocate of multilateral diplomacy, continues to play a growing role in fostering dialogue, cooperation, and peace-oriented initiatives worldwide, Caliber.Az reports per the ministry.

In recent years, Azerbaijan has expanded its engagement within key international frameworks, including the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA). The country has also held successful chairmanships and leadership roles in several major institutions, such as the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), and the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC).

Baku has increasingly positioned itself as a hub for international dialogue and cooperation, hosting a range of high-profile global events. These include the World Urban Forum (WUF13), a special meeting marking the 10th anniversary of the Islamic Development Bank, and World Environment Day 2026. The upcoming CICA Summit of Heads of State and Government further underscores Azerbaijan’s role as a platform for multilateral engagement, the ministry said.

The ministry highlighted Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) as a landmark achievement in the country’s diplomatic history. It noted that Azerbaijan continues to advance the agreements reached at COP29, with climate diplomacy and sustainable development now central pillars of its foreign policy. The country is also set to host the Regional Climate Week for the first time in 2026.

The statement further pointed to the increasing significance of Baku as a centre for international cooperation. Recent decisions include the establishment of the headquarters of the Non-Aligned Movement Youth Organization and the Clean Energy Center of the ECO in the capital. Additionally, a decision taken at a conference in Istanbul earlier this year confirmed that the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network will also be headquartered in Baku.

Azerbaijan also stressed its commitment to fair geographical representation within international organizations, noting its active participation in electoral processes. In 2025 alone, the country successfully secured membership in 14 international bodies.

Reiterating its foreign policy priorities, the country's Foreign Ministry said it will continue to contribute to global and regional peace, security, and prosperity through active engagement in multilateral diplomacy and international cooperation formats.
