Death toll following powerful earthquakes in Türkiye rises to 48,000

Turkish Minister of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change Murat Kurum has said that the death toll as a result of the powerful earthquakes in Türkiye has risen to 48,000.

Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that more than 46,000 people died as a result of earthquakes, 230,000 buildings were greatly damaged, TASS reports.

Two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.7 and 7.6 occurred in southeastern Türkiye on February 6. Buildings were destructed as a result of tremors in neighbouring countries, including Syria.
