Iran calls for tighter enforcement of mandatory hijab rules

Iranian Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei has instructed prosecutors to step up measures against women appearing in public without the mandatory hijab, Iran International reports.

Speaking at a meeting of the Supreme Judicial Council, he described refusing to wear the hijab as a violation of social norms and called on the prosecutor general and oversight bodies to firmly prevent such cases within the framework of existing legislation.

Mohseni-Ejei said the position is shared by Iran’s president and parliament speaker. According to him, the authorities do not intend to abandon enforcement of the country’s hijab laws despite protests both inside and outside Iran.
