Moscow calls for Israeli-Iranian restraint amid recent escalation
Russia is calling for restraint from both Israel and Iran amid rising tensions, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said, commenting on Israel’s recent strikes on Iranian territory.
Zakharova expressed Russia's deep concern over the “volatile escalation” between Israel and Iran, which poses serious security risks for the region, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
She attributed the root causes of their conflict to the unresolved Palestinian-Israeli issue, emphasizing that a solution must be based on the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly resolutions.
"We believe that the swift normalization of the military-political situation in the Middle East is urgently needed. We strongly urge all parties involved to exercise restraint, halt the violence, and prevent events from spiralling into a catastrophic scenario," Zakharova stated, adding that Moscow is prepared to work with all sides to reduce tensions.
Zakharova also highlighted the importance of avoiding actions that could provoke Iran into retaliatory measures.
Notably, the Israeli airstrike on October 26 targeted various installations in Iran, including surface-to-air missile systems and air defence facilities, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The operation involved over 100 aircraft operating from a distance of 2,000 kilometres.
