Russia should be ready to withdraw its troops from South Caucasus Armenian pundit says

05 April 2024 17:15

Armenian political scientist Garegin Miskaryan has said that Russia should be ready to withdraw its troops from the South Caucasus.

"At least, I realize that the environment formed under Russian influence in Armenia was the one resulting from the relations between the colonizer and the colony," Miskaryan told Armenian media, Caliber.Az reports.

"There were several factors to maintain Russia's influence in the region. However, to ensure military presence, there was the issue of Karabakh, which never allowed such relations between Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia that could form independent states. This was completely contrary to the logic used by the colonists. This is a methodology that came from the USSR, so to speak. And so, if this problem were addressed, it would be a direct threat to Russia's presence here.

Now there is a situation when the Karabakh problem like that, at least with the content it had, has no such problem as ensuring the security of the people living there. And in this case the question arises who needs Russia in this region, if there is no conflict, there is no need for peacekeepers or mediators. So a conflict has to be created from Russia's point of view, and this conflict could very easily be between Armenia and Azerbaijan. It is difficult to provoke a new conflict, it is difficult to provoke Armenians, Azerbaijanis and Georgians in Georgia. Therefore, by 2025 Russia should be ready to withdraw its so-called peacekeepers from Azerbaijan, and after that, in all likelihood, it will withdraw its troops from the territory of Armenia," the pundit said.
