Sweden refuses to extradite two people accused of coup attempt to Türkiye
The Swedish Attorney General's Office has sent a statement to the Supreme Court that two Turkish citizens in Sweden, whose extradition is requested by Ankara, cannot be expelled.
Türkiye has put forward several requirements for the approval of Sweden's bid for NATO membership, according to Expressen newspaper.
One contains a request for the extradition of two citizens identified by Ankara as terrorists accused of an attempted coup in the summer of 2016.
One of the men lives in the Dalarna province as a refugee and has a permanent residence permit. Türkiye accuses him of using the ByLock mobile app as part of a communications network during the coup attempt and participating in a "revolution".
Moreover, the man will be persecuted if he returns to Türkiye, as he adheres to opposition political views.
The second man, who also lives in Stockholm as a refugee, has a three-year residence permit in Sweden. He was convicted in Türkiye in 2016 for being a member of an armed terrorist organisation and using ByLock. Both citizens deny the accusations imputed to them by Türkiye.
According to the Swedish prosecutor's office, these actions are not criminal under the laws of the kingdom.
