US accelerates development of hypersonic weapons
The United States is set to expedite the development and testing of hypersonic weapons, according to Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder.
During a regular briefing for journalists, Ryder emphasized the importance of advancing hypersonic technology for national defence, Caliber.Az reports citing foreign media.
"As for hypersonic weapons, we will continue to develop a number of hypersonic programs. We will work to accelerate the development and testing of those programs," he stated.
Although Ryder refrained from providing specific details about upcoming tests, he assured that the commitment to enhancing hypersonic capabilities aligns with the national defence strategy.
Ryder noted the significance of hypersonic weapons, which travel at speeds exceeding Mach 5, making them capable of evading current missile defence systems and delivering precision strikes over long distances.
He further mentioned that the US Navy and Army recently conducted a successful hypersonic missile test over the Pacific Ocean.
In addition to the ongoing development programs, Ryder highlighted collaborative efforts with industry partners and research institutions. These collaborations aim to accelerate innovation and integrate cutting-edge technologies into the hypersonic weapons program. The commitment extends to investing in infrastructure and testing facilities necessary for rapid prototyping and evaluation.
The Pentagon's increased focus on hypersonic weapons comes amid growing concerns about similar advancements by adversaries, particularly China and Russia. Both nations have reportedly made significant strides in hypersonic technology, prompting the US to intensify its efforts to ensure a competitive edge.
