US committed to defending Israel against potential Iranian attack White House statement

28 August 2024 09:36

The United States remains committed to defending Israel in the event of an Iranian attack and remains hopeful for a ceasefire agreement in Gaza, said White House National Security spokesperson John Kirby on August 27.

Speaking to Israel’s TV channel, Kirby emphasized the seriousness of Iranian threats, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

“We believe they are positioned to launch an attack if they choose to, which is why we have enhanced our military presence in the region,” he stated.

Kirby outlined the US stance towards Iran, urging restraint: “Our message to Iran is consistent: Don’t escalate. There’s no reason to start an all-out regional war. And if it comes to that, we are prepared to defend Israel.”

Iran has threatened a strong response following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last month, an attack it attributes to Israel, though Israel has not confirmed its involvement. The US has bolstered its regional military presence with two aircraft-carrier strike groups and an additional squadron of F-22 fighter jets, which Kirby noted would remain “as long as necessary to defend Israel and our own forces.”

Kirby also expressed optimism about a potential ceasefire in Gaza to end the 10-month conflict and secure the release of 108 remaining Israeli hostages, describing the negotiation process as “constructive.”

While declining to assign blame for the current impasse, he noted that continued engagement in talks, particularly in Doha, is a positive sign, underscoring that compromise and leadership from both Israel and Hamas are crucial for a deal.

“Hamas is still participating in these discussions, which is a good sign. No party has completely walked away from the negotiation process,” he added.
