US security adviser named UN envoy in Trump’s first foreign policy reshuffle

03 May 2025 18:31

Just over 100 days into President Donald Trump's second term, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz is stepping down and transitioning into a new diplomatic role as US Ambassador to the United Nations.

The move comes as part of a broader White House reshuffle aimed at recalibrating the administration's foreign policy apparatus, Caliber.Az reports citing foreign media.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Waltz was given a selection of ambassadorial roles during discussions with White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. Among the options presented was the prestigious post of US Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. After deliberation, Waltz opted for the UN position. President Trump made the official announcement via social media, hours after reports surfaced that Waltz would be exiting his current post.

Waltz’s final day at the White House was scheduled for May 2, sources confirmed. His departure paves the way for Secretary of State Marco Rubio to assume dual responsibilities—continuing as America’s top diplomat while also serving as interim national security adviser. The two men reportedly met on May 1 to coordinate the handoff.

National Security Council spokespeople declined to comment on the leadership transition. However, Waltz’s deputy, Alex Wong, remains in his position for now and is reportedly assisting with the transition process.

President Trump has reportedly been deliberate in his selection process for the Saudi ambassadorship, viewing the post as critical to US strategic interests. The White House has consulted several trusted figures, including former senior adviser and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, on potential nominees. No announcement has yet been made regarding the Saudi post, though Trump is expected to visit Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE between May 13–16.

Saudi Arabia holds a prominent place in Trump’s Middle East strategy. It was his first international stop during his 2017 presidency and remains a key player in global energy markets and US arms sales. Trump has also renewed efforts to expand the Abraham Accords—a hallmark of his first term—which normalized relations between Israel and several Arab states.

The inclusion of Saudi Arabia in this framework remains a key objective for Trump, despite setbacks under the Biden administration due to the Israel-Hamas conflict. Riyadh has publicly maintained that any such normalization must include a credible pathway to a future Palestinian state.
