Tunisia's new constitution enters into force

    WORLD  18 August 2022 - 22:00

Tunisian President Kays Said announced that the new constitution, which was accepted with a referendum on 25 July, has entered into force.

In his speech broadcast on state television, President Said said that they experienced one of the historical days in Tunisia, "We have many historical days and 25 July of this year and last year are among them," TRT Haber reports.

Expressing that the new constitution, which was accepted with a referendum on July 25, entered into force, Said emphasized that July 25 is the day of harmony between constitutional legitimacy and popular legitimacy.

Pointing out that the Tunisian people want to cleanse their country and those who try to seize the power of the people must be held accountable to the judiciary, Said said, " A new election law will be created. The effect of election laws on institutions is not less than the provisions of the constitution ." he said.

Stating that the Constitutional Court will be established for the protection of rights and freedoms, Said emphasized that rights and freedoms will be protected, but social justice is a priority issue.

Stating that it is time for policies and legislation that will ensure comprehensive national rapprochement in Tunisia, Said said that those who tried to prevent the constitutional referendum held on July 25 were not successful.

Tunisian President Said suspended the work of the Assembly on July 25, 2021, and lifted the parliamentary immunity, and on September 22, 2021, he expanded his powers with new decrees and completely subordinated the executive body to him.

With the "road map of exit from the political crisis" announced on 13 December 2021, Said stated that a constitutional amendment referendum would be held on 25 July 2022 and an early general election would be held on 17 December 2022 and the Assembly would remain closed until then.

Faruk Buasker, Chairman of the Tunisian Supreme Election Board, announced at a press conference on Tuesday, August 16 that the draft constitution submitted to the referendum on July 25 was accepted and the new constitution would come into effect after President Said's approval.
