Azerbaijan sends humanitarian aid to Kazakhstan amidst flooding crisis

24 April 2024 13:52

In response to the devastating floods that have struck Kazakhstan in recent weeks, Azerbaijan has stepped forward to offer support by sending humanitarian aid to the affected areas.

The Consulate General of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Aktau, along with the Azerbaijani diaspora in the city, has coordinated the dispatch of five vehicles loaded with essential supplies for the flood-affected citizens of Kazakhstan, Caliber.Az reports, citing Trend.

The flooding, which began in late March and has intensified in recent days, has caused widespread displacement and destruction across the country. With at least 120,000 people forced from their homes, authorities have declared a state of emergency in 10 out of 17 regions, marking the worst flooding crisis in 80 years, according to Kazakh media.

Despite stabilization in some areas, including North Kazakhstan and Atyrau, significant challenges persist. Thirty-two road overflows and 56 road washouts, including nine bridges, have disrupted transportation routes, hampering the delivery of vital supplies to remote villages. As a result, food and medication shortages are a pressing concern for many communities.

The situation remains particularly dire in the West Kazakhstan Region, where the Zhaiyk River continues to rise, prompting the evacuation of thousands of residents. In this region alone, over 13,000 country houses remain flooded, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

Azerbaijan's swift response underscores its commitment to regional solidarity and cooperation in times of crisis. As Kazakhstan grapples with the aftermath of these devastating floods, international assistance, such as that provided by Azerbaijan, plays a crucial role in supporting affected communities and facilitating recovery efforts.
