08 May 2024 20:27
The death toll from floods in Brazil's southernmost state has risen to 95, with 372 people injured.
As Metropoles reports, this was announced by the governor of the state of Rio Grande do Sul Eduardo Leite. Some 159,000 local residents have been forced to leave their homes, at least 131 people are missing.
"95 deaths... The numbers are increasing, but unfortunately, we are still forecasting that they have a high degree of inaccuracy because we are still experiencing an emergency," Leite said.
In late April, Brazil's southernmost state on the border with Uruguay was hit by the heaviest rains since 1941. The rains caused a dam on the Rio das Antas River to collapse, flooding nearby communities.
