Brazilian authorities probe explosive plot against President Lula, STF judge
The Civil Police of the Federal District in Brazil, in partnership with the Federal Police, have launched an investigation into fresh death threats targeting President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and Supreme Federal Court (STF) judge Alexandre de Moraes.
Initial reports suggest the planned attack, allegedly scheduled for this month, would involve the use of explosives, grenades, and a 50 BMG rifle - a high-calibre weapon capable of taking down helicopters and typically deployed by elite marksmen, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Authorities have confirmed that a dedicated inquiry has been opened to investigate the case. Law enforcement officials stress that threats of this nature are always treated as credible and are currently working to identify the perpetrators, collaborators, and resources involved in the alleged plot.
The case, which has been under scrutiny for a week, is being handled by the newly created Division for the Protection and Combat of Violent Extremism (Dpcev) of the Civil Police, alongside the Federal Police's Directorate of Police Intelligence (DIP).
The investigation remains classified due to its sensitive nature.
