EU threatens retaliation over potential US extra tariffs on exports
The European Commission (EC) has warned that it will take necessary steps to protect the interests of businesses, workers, and consumers in the European Union (EU) if the United States moves forward with imposing additional tariffs on EU goods.
The EU expressed its strong opposition to the imposition of such tariffs, stating that there is no justification for such measures, Caliber.Az reports, citing an EC press release.
In response to growing concerns over potential tariffs, the EC emphasized that they would act swiftly to safeguard European interests.
"The imposition of tariffs would be unlawful and economically counterproductive, especially given the deeply integrated production chains the EU and US established through Transatlantic trade and investment," the press release reads.
The Commission stressed that tariffs are essentially taxes that would ultimately burden US citizens, raising business costs and fueling inflation.
Furthermore, the EU cautioned that tariffs would increase economic uncertainty, disrupting the efficiency and integration of global markets. With both sides relying heavily on each other for trade and investment, the EC underscored that any disruption could have widespread implications, undermining the strength of Transatlantic economic ties.
