Finland preparing for continuation of migration crisis on border with Russia
Finnish Border Guards expect the migrant crisis at the Russian border to continue.
By the decision of the Finnish Council of Ministers, all checkpoints on the Russian border will remain closed until January 14, 2024, TASS reports.
Border Guards also expect migration from Russia to Finland to continue in one form or another after January 14, 2024. “The resumption of transit through border checkpoints and the situation will depend on the government’s subsequent decision on this issue.
Border Patrol closed the checkpoint twice. First, automobile checkpoints were closed from November 30 to December 14, 2022. Two checkpoints were later opened, but the flow of migrants resumed. The Council of Ministers decided to extend the closure of the borders until January 14.
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo in December stated that the country’s government will evaluate the possibility of sending back immigrants coming to Russia from the Russia-Finland border without considering their asylum applications.
