Internal struggles brewing in US Democratic Party
The US Democratic Party faces the threat of division due to shifts in stance by presidential candidate and current Vice President Kamala Harris on several key issues.
“These tensions [within the Democratic Party] will soon become apparent,” US Representative Jesús García [Democrat from Illinois] said, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
The congressman specifically expressed dissatisfaction with the party's shifting stance on the situation with migrants at the US southern border, criticising it for a "defensive reaction" to Republican attacks. García’s concerns are shared by fellow Democrats, Congresswoman Delia Ramirez (Illinois) and Congressman Greg Casar (Texas). Several other Democrats also voiced their displeasure over the party's move towards more centrist positions, suggesting that the “division will become more pronounced” after the November 5 presidential election.
Harris has also reconsidered her stance on banning fracking and the assault rifle buyback programme. The Democratic Party has removed references to universal free healthcare from its platform and added "combative rhetoric" regarding security at the southern border. This indicates that a "struggle is brewing" within the party, despite Democrats' claims of unity around Harris’ candidacy.
