Syrian military source denies Iranian strike on Al-Tanf base VIDEO/UPDATED

17 July 2026 14:16

A Syrian military source has denied reports that Iran carried out a strike on the Al-Tanf base in southeastern Syria, following a claim by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps that it had targeted the facility in retaliation for US attacks.

“We deny any Iranian bombardment targeting the Al-Tanf area,” the source told AFP on July 17, speaking on condition of anonymity, Asharq Al-Awsat reports.

The base is located near Syria’s borders with Jordan and Iraq. US forces had previously been stationed there as part of the US-led coalition against Islamic State, but Washington said its troops withdrew from the facility earlier this year.

Earlier on July 17, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed to have attacked a US special operations command centre at Al-Tanf. Iranian state media said the strike was carried out in retaliation for the killing of Iranian soldiers in Iranshahr.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it carried out a strike against the headquarters of U.S. Special Operations Command near the Al-Tanf base in southwestern Syria in response to U.S. attacks on Iranian territory.

According to an IRGC statement, the operation was conducted by the corps’ aerospace forces and resulted in the destruction of a radar station and several helicopters, as well as the deaths of a significant number of U.S. military personnel, Caliber.Az reports.
