Lebanon urges US to contain Israel amid Golan Heights incident
Lebanese Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Abdallah BouHabib has warned the US that a major Israeli assault on Lebanese territory could spark a broader regional conflict.
“Lebanon is urging the US to take measures to contain Israel and prevent an escalation that could destabilize the entire Middle East,” he said, Caliber.Az reports citing Al Mayadeen TV channel.
BouHabib revealed that the US has urged Lebanese authorities to take action to contain Hezbollah.
In response to the July 27 incident in the Golan Heights village of Majdal Shams, where a rocket strike on a sports ground resulted in the deaths of 12 children and teenagers, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has called for an immediate halt to hostilities across all Middle Eastern fronts.
He emphasised Lebanon's condemnation of all forms of violence and attacks on civilians.
On July 27, a rocket attack on a football field in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights resulted in the death of 12 people, including children, according to Israeli authorities.
They have accused Hezbollah of carrying out the strike and vowed to impose severe consequences on the Iran-backed Lebanese group. Hezbollah has denied responsibility for the attack, which is the deadliest in Israeli or Israeli-annexed territory since the onset of the Gaza conflict.
The incident has significantly heightened tension and raised concerns about a potential full-scale conflict between the heavily armed adversaries.
