Latvia to transfer armoured vehicles to Ukraine

16 September 2024 16:53

Latvia has announced that it will transfer CVR(T) combat reconnaissance tracked armoured vehicles to Ukraine, marking a significant step in its ongoing military support for Kyiv.

The Latvian Defence Ministry confirmed the decision but chose not to disclose the exact number of vehicles being handed over for operational security reasons, Caliber.Az reports, citing Latvian media.

Latvian Defence Minister Andris Spruds revealed that the CVR(T) vehicles, previously purchased from Britain, will be replaced by new infantry fighting vehicles currently in the final stages of procurement. These new vehicles are intended to enhance the Latvian army's capabilities and support its tactical operations.

The CVR(T) is a versatile family of British tracked armoured vehicles, developed in the mid-20th century. Renowned for their high manoeuvrability and ability to perform a variety of missions, including reconnaissance, patrolling, and fire support, these vehicles have been a key asset in Latvia's military inventory.

Latvia had initially acquired 123 CVR(T) vehicles under a 2014 contract with Britain, with 116 of them modernised. An additional contract signed in 2019 secured more equipment to further enhance the Latvian fleet.

This transfer is part of Latvia's broader commitment to support Ukraine, which includes military aid amounting to 0.25% of its GDP annually until 2026. Earlier reports indicate that Latvia is also sending hundreds of units of computer equipment, specialized clothing, binoculars, and other supplies to Ukraine.

On September 11, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina announced a new military aid package for Ukraine, which will include armoured vehicles and drones, and the training and equipping of additional Ukrainian military personnel. This move underscores Latvia's ongoing dedication to supporting Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia.
