Trump says only he can negotiate peace between Russia, Ukraine
US President Donald Trump suggested he is uniquely positioned to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.
Commenting on the talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Türkiye on May 16, Trump expressed confidence in a possible peace deal, Caliber.Az reports per his interview on Fox News.
"I think we will make a deal, we have to get together. I think we will probably schedule it. Because I'm tired of having other people go and meet, and everything else," he remarked.
During the interview, Trump also praised his special envoy, Steve Witkoff for his work throughout the Türkiye negotiations, but implied that resolving the conflict in Ukraine is a task only he could successfully handle.
“It’s a very tough job. It is a job that because of position I think I'm the only one who's going to be able to do that one. And we are going to be able to it fast,” he stated.
Commenting on the war in Ukraine, Trump said he believed Putin is weary of the conflict.
"I think Putin is tired of this whole thing. He is not looking good, and he wants to look good," Trump said.
The Istanbul meeting marked the first face-to-face discussions between Russian and Ukrainian representatives since 2022. Russian presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky, who led the Russian delegation, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the talks.
However, according to a Ukrainian source, the discussions revealed a deep divide between the two sides. The source described Russia's demands as “detached from reality” and “non-constructive,” saying they went far beyond what had previously been discussed.
