Poland activates aviation units to protect national airspace

Poland deployed its aircraft on the morning of September 30 to monitor the country’s airspace, the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces said in a post on X.

In addition to aircraft, Poland also mobilised ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems.

“These measures are preventive in nature and are aimed at ensuring security and protecting Polish airspace, particularly in regions bordering areas of threat,” the post added.

Poland has been reinforcing its air-defence posture in 2026 as it seeks to protect its airspace against a wider range of aerial threats. Its layered defence network combines the Wisła, Narew and Pilica systems with new counter-drone capabilities, reflecting a broader shift in European air defence toward addressing not only conventional aircraft but also drones, cruise missiles and other airborne threats.

This has been particularly relevant for Poland’s eastern regions, where developments linked to the war in Ukraine have periodically prompted airspace alerts over potential aerial threats.
