Trump: Iran to eventually give up as war takes economic toll

US President Donald Trump said on September 29 that he did not know whether Iran was ready to "give up yet", while describing the country as doing "very poorly" in its war with the United States.

"I don't know if they are going to give up yet but they'll give up," Trump told reporters outside the White House after meeting with executives from companies developing artificial intelligence technologies, Reuters reports. 

"They are doing very poorly," he added.

The US blockade has cut into Iran's financial lifeline, including its oil exports, while the economic costs of the war have made life increasingly difficult for Iranians.

“You know, we took more oil out of the Hormuz Strait over the last couple of days than at any point in history,” Trump told reporters at the White House.

He also reiterated his confidence that Iran will never have nuclear weapons. Iranian authorities have repeatedly claimed that the Islamic Republic does not seek to develop nuclear weapons.
