Russian LNG shipments to Spain surge in first half of 2026

10 July 2026 17:10

Spain increased its imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) during the first six months of 2026, with Russia strengthening its position among the country's leading gas suppliers despite broader European efforts to reduce reliance on Russian energy.

According to data released by Spanish energy company Enagás and cited by TASS, Spain imported 37,356 GWh of Russian LNG between January and June, representing 19.7% of total LNG imports. That marks a significant increase from 26,208 GWh imported during the same period in 2025.

Russia ranked as Spain's third-largest natural gas supplier in the first half of the year, behind Algeria, which accounted for 33.9% of imports, and the United States with 29.4%.

Imports also rose sharply in June, when Spain purchased 5,473 GWh of Russian LNG, compared with 3,268 GWh in June 2025. During the month, Russia became Spain's second-largest LNG supplier, providing 21.1% of the country's LNG imports, second only to Algeria.

The latest figures contrast with the overall trend seen last year. Enagás previously reported that Spain imported 42,629 GWh of Russian LNG in 2025, down from 72,360 GWh in 2024. Even so, Russia remained the country's third-largest LNG supplier for the year.
