US faces pressure to negotiate directly with Hamas for American hostages
Families of American hostages held by Hamas are pressing the Biden administration to consider a unilateral deal with the militant group to secure the release of their loved ones, bypassing Israeli involvement.
Following the deaths of six hostages, including American Hirsch Goldberg-Polin, the families met with National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan to advocate for this approach, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Although the administration is open to exploring all options, officials believe that a deal involving Israel remains the most viable. There is growing concern among the hostages' families and some officials that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu might not agree to a ceasefire in Gaza, which is crucial for any deal involving Israel.
Earlier discussions about a unilateral deal were explored in June but were dismissed by senior officials. The administration has considered potential prisoner swaps, including releasing individuals convicted of supporting Hamas.
The Biden administration continues to pursue a broader agreement involving Israel, with President Biden hopeful for a positive resolution.
